Roseville Area Middle School – Heart Screen #41
We screened 181 participants, taught 222 kids & parents CPR & AED awareness, and donated an outdoor SAVESTATION for RAMS.

We had 11 abnormal structural and electrical defects. These will require follow-up care with a family physician, and in some cases a cardiologist. Many of these conditions will be monitored as they grow older. Some of these will require immediate attention.
16 Elevated blood pressures. Our process is to take blood pressure after EKG & Echo, seated-from both arms. Using the Baylor Blood Pressure Protocol, when readings are high, we recheck again before physician consult. Physicians will instruct parents/kids to check at home or follow up with PCP.
Thanks to longtime P4P volunteer & nurse Katy Westby for making our first Roseville screen a success. She made connections, helped set the date, coordinated & recruited key volunteers, and oversaw hospitality for volunteers. Moreover, Katy secured a $5K grant from the Roseville Area Community fund, which helped pay for this event & the donated AED.
Thanks to: Katy and her family, Roseville schools leaders, Todd Lieser, Kristine Rossow, Heidi Geoerge, and Jenny Loeck for the space and promoting the screen, and a special thanks to RAMS custodian John for his smile & willingness to help. Thanks to Brady Bell and his family for sharing his story and helping us with the screen.

As part of our mission, we provide host schools with AEDs as a ”Thank you” for allowing us to use their facility and promoting the screen. Like many schools, RAMS does not have an outdoor AED. Working with administration, a new SAVESTATION tower will be placed near the main sidewalk. The SAVESTATION is weatherproof, temperature-controlled, and is ready for use anytime, by anyone. Special thanks to Roger & Deb Hennig, owners of Savestation, for traveling from Toronto CA to visit our screen.
An important part of our screening process is the Echocardiogram (Echo). We want to thank Philips Electronics and the local Philips rep. Jason Anderson for loaning us THREE additional echo machines.
We must mention we set a record of teaching 222 kids/parents how to perform hands only CPR & use an AED. Thanks to Bruce, Kelly, Heidi, Alayna, Karen, and Abby for teaching and recruiting kids & parents. And to St. Paul Fire/EMS for showing up and helping us out.
Thanks to Betsy Wilson, Thuy-Tien Truong and Georgi Eckstein, for coordinating & triage the providers; Dave Homans, Steve Heifetz, Andy Schneider, Bart Laihinen, Paul Mittelstadt, Michael Loushin, Bryan Bader, Niki Myers, Heather Haakenson, Mark Haugland, and Emma Leirdahl for taking time out of their busy schedules to review the results and explain them to the kids and parents. We are grateful for all you do.
Last and certainly not least, to all our volunteers, THANK YOU! Set up, take down, recruiting, data entry, directing, hospitality, and testing, thank you for showing up and sharing your time to help us save lives. We cannot do this without you.
Our next heart screen is Saturday January 10th at the Apple Valley Senior Center, as part of the 11th Annual Play For Patrick Bantam Hockey Tournament.
