Mounds View High School - October 2023
Play For Patrick Heart screen #31 was hosted by Mounds View High School. This screen was dedicated to Beth Hidy, a junior at Mounds View HS, who passed away from sudden cardiac arrest September 15, 2015. Beth had an undetected heart defect, PFO-Patent Foramen Ovale with dilated cardiomyopathy.
We screened 158 kids/young adults and found:
- 102 Normal
- 16 Normal with minor variant
- 29 Elevated Blood Pressure after 2nd check
- 11 Abnormal
The abnormal findings were Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO), Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW), Premature Ventricular Contractions (PVC), 2-Bicuspic Aortic Valves (BAV), 2-Mild Right Ventricular Hypertrophy, (RVH), Repolarization Abnormality, Increase velocity of blood flow in Thoracic Aorta, and Tightness in chest & Shortness of breath. Kids identified with Abnormal, Normal with minor variant and Elevated BP are encouraged to visit their family physician and/or a cardiologist to verify screen results and get proper care.
We trained 141 parents/kids hands only CPR and AED awareness, and donated a new AED to the Mounds View Athletic department for use in the field. A very special thanks to Jim & Mary Hidy, parents of Beth Hidy. Jim and Mary coordinated the Mounds View screen and supplied the hospitality for all volunteers. We are grateful for Jim and Mary’s ongoing support & dedication in helping save young lives. Thanks to Mounds View Public Schools, MVHS Activities Director Jim Galvin, Assistant AD Bo Lovdahl, and staff for welcoming us, promoting the screen, and allowing us to use their wonderful space. Thanks to Jason Anderson & his Philips team for loaning us 2-Philips Echo units. We are fortunate Philips has given us their latest technologically advanced machines for our volunteer echo technicians to use. Thanks Dr. Siontis, Dr. Newman, Jennifer Dugan, and their Mayo Clinic colleagues for allowing us to be a part of the Mayo HCM Research Project and helping us screen young hearts over the past year. We look forward to learning more from their research and hope we can work together again. Last but certainly not least, we cannot do this without the help of our volunteers. Medical Professionals and non-medical volunteers who give their time and talent to save and change lives.
The passion & energy our volunteers bring to these events makes them extra special. Our next Screen is January 6th, where we will screen the players participating in Eastview Youth Hockey’s Patrick Schoonover Bantam Hockey Tournament.
