Patrick Schoonover Heart Foundation

The Patrick Schoonover Heart Foundation was created to honor & remember Patrick Schoonover who passed away at the age of 14, due to Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), caused by undetected heart defects.  The goal of the foundation is to bring SCA awareness, education, prevention and eliminate SCA in kids.

SCA is the leading cause of death among student athletes.  The Patrick Schoonover Heart Foundation offers Free Heart screens for ALL kids 14-24 throughout the Minneapolis-St. Paul area regardless of race, gender, income, or demographics.
About Play For Patrick

Play For Patrick Youth Heart Screens

The screens include checking of; Height/Weight, Blood Pressure, EKG (electrical current of the heart), Echocardiogram (video of the structure of the heart) Physician consultation and hands only CPR & AED training.

The foundation relies on volunteers to help with each event. Up to 100 medical & non-medical volunteers are needed to make the screens happen. The donations received will help the foundation pay for the medical & non-medical supplies and equipment, lunch, refreshments, and tee shirts for volunteers. And AEDs that are given to the host High School or club.

The foundation does not have paid staff, so all donations are used for screening young hearts. From August 2015 to October 2023, the Patrick Schoonover Heart Foundation conducted 31 Play for Patrick youth heart screens. Screened 5,376 kids, found 341 with elevated blood pressure (w/repeated check), 313 with abnormal electrical or structural heart defects, taught 4,295 kids & adults CPR & AED awareness and donated 18 AEDs to area Schools.

As the mom of an athlete that was screened, I thank you for turning your personal tragedy into triumph with the help you are providing.

We recently attended a screening in Mounds View and wanted to express our sincere gratitude for the work you are doing. We never expected that we would walk away with the findings that we did for our son. The ECG detected that he has a fairly rare heart condition known as WPW. We have since seen a pediatric cardiologist and he is having the procedure to correct it in the coming weeks. We plan to spread the word about the great work your foundation is doing. You are impacting so many in so many ways and we are forever grateful.

Thank you so very much for this wonderful service you are doing for the safety of other teens. My grandsons have had it done with no problems.

I wanted to thank the Play for Patrick foundation for offering heart screenings for so many athletes... Such an amazing gift to give. During my son screening something was detected but they were uncertain which of two things it might be (ASD or a Stretched PFO). We spent a day at Mayo Clinic having a complete cardiac work-up done and are so relieved to report that it is a PFO (something that approximately 25% of the population has). Those at Mayo were very impressed to hear that your foundation was providing these screenings and were thrilled that we were following up on the exam. From our family to yours we wanted to extend a personal “Thank You”. We are so impressed that through your grief you were able to find strength to provided so may other athletes with heart-education. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!

Our son was one of two kids on his team found to have abnormalities. His was a PDA which he had corrected over spring break. All the docs had said we never would have known about it until something big happened. Our son had a follow up echo 6 weeks after the coils were placed in his heart. They measured his heart size at the 70th percentile, down from the 97th percentile measured prior to the procedure. This showed how hard his heart was working. We just wanted to thank you for all you do to promote the importance of this screening. We push everyone we know to take part in these events. Thanks again for all you do.

We saw the cardiologist on Nov 29th. He was very confident that our son has something called intermittent WPW that only shows up occasionally and only at a resting heartbeat. When our son was at elevated heartbeat, his EKG readings were normal. To be thorough on due-diligence, he wore a Holter monitor for 24 hours which was a time when he also had a 1.5 hour hockey practice. This is a huge sigh of relief to our family. Credit to P4P in getting this accurate information so that our son can move along into his adult life understanding that he has this intermittent condition. And if he sees any adverse symptoms in the future (racing heart, dizziness, etc) that he should get seen immediately along with providing the cardiologist the background he has on his condition as found at a P4P screening.
