Cretin Derham Hall High School – Heart Screen 39

On April 26, 2025, we honored Mac Greeman, a first-year student at CDH, who loved learning, music, playing sports and loving life. He passed away Thanksgiving day 2013 at the age of 14, from sudden cardiac arrest, caused by a virus that attacked Mac’s heart.

We screened 138 kids and taught 145 kids/parents CPR & AED Awareness.
Nine kids with high blood pressure-all based on repeat readings, and validated as > 95th percentile for age, sex, and height using the Baylor college of Medicine website & algorithm.
Two kids with normal variants – One- PFO (without interatrial septal aneurysm), and one sinus tachycardia.

One abnormal –MVP on echo with trace MR, no chamber enlargement, plus family history.

We would like to thank Cretin Derham Hall and AD Matt Funk for allowing us to use the Mauer Fieldhouse and helping promote the screen. In keeping with our mission and a token of goodwill, Play For Patrick donated a SaveStation outdoor AED cabinet and Lifepak CR2 AED. The cabinet is weatherproof, and temperature controlled, allowing the AED to be ready for use year-round.

An important part of our screening process is the Echocardiogram (Echo). We want to thank Philips Electronics and the local Philips rep. Jason Anderson for loaning us two additional echo machines.
Thanks to our echo techs & students. Scanning hearts is not an easy job, especially when they screen many kids in a brief period. Yet, they volunteer, have fun, do magnificent work and smile.

Once again Betsy Wilson and Tien Truong recruited and coordinated the medical providers. Thanks to Andy Schneider, Bart Laihinen, Mark Haugland, Dave Homans, Emily Williams, George Chen, Jay Traverse, Leslie Albrecht, and Paul Mittelstadt for taking time out of their busy schedules to review the results and explain them to the kids and parents. We are grateful for all you do. Special thanks to Dave Homans for reviewing all results and identifying the 12 kids who will require follow-up care.

Last and certainly not least, to all our volunteers, THANK YOU! Set up, take down, recruiting, data entry, directing, hospitality, and testing, thank you for showing up and sharing your time to help us save lives. Without you, Play For Patrick does not exist.

Our 40th heart screen will be Saturday May 17, at Coon Rapids High School. Participant and volunteer registration is at https://playforpatrick.org/event/coon-rapids-high-school/
